Health and Fitness
28/2/2022
One might think 'Health' is a similar word to 'Fitness' as both are used with reference to the human body. The former is used for 'state of being' and the latter is 'ability of a human being'. Let's put some light on each of them.
According to WHO, " Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease."
Health also encompasses some more spheres like mental or psychological health and spiritual and social health. Many medicos relate all these combined to lower stress levels to improve health. In a nutshell, we can say a person with good health has a body functioning and performing in a better way.
To maintain better physical health one should practice effective hygiene, avoid addiction, follow a native medicine system like Ayurveda, use protective devices, and do regular exercises like Yoga and gym.
For Mental, spiritual, and Social health, one should take life positively, accept adversities and develop adaptability, set goals and try to achieve them, keep good company, attend social gatherings, following cultural ethics and traditions.
Let's see what 'Fitness' is...
Fitness is one's ability to execute daily activities with optimal performance, endurance, and strength with the management of disease, fatigue, and stress.
Fitness is different for different people of different ages, work, and environments. Fitness also has different aspects such as Cardiovascular fitness meaning a good state of heart and lung functioning. We can have regular swimming sessions, brisk walking, jogging, or cycling to maintain it. Secondly, it is Muscular strength meaning their ability to continue without tiring out. To build better muscular strength one should have different muscle exercises like Yogasanas. Thirdly it's Body Composition which includes the percentage of fats, water, bone, and muscles. Exact knowledge of this can determine overall health and fitness. Lastly comes Flexibility meaning the range of movement across the joints. Flexibility prevents injuries in an accidental situation. It can be improved with adequately guided stretching exercises given in Yoga.
To sum up, we can say as a healthy mind dwells in a healthy body, Health is a must for all. Fitness of all kinds may vary from person to person depending on age, occupation, and environment. With regular appropriate exercise and a balanced diet as per the Ayurvedic lifestyle and guidance of an expert, we can certainly improve both, Health and Fitness.
